  • Description

Volunteers would be giving support in all the basic areas. The types of tasks that they would be asked to help with include:

    * Help prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for all children. If you want to learn how to make Costa Rican dishes this is an excellent way to learn how.
    * Help facilitate nap time and ensure that all children are comfortable and assist those who need it.
    * Help facilitate bath time for all children at the center.
    * Help clean the house by creating a time each day where the children who are old enough are responsible to help you clean up their areas.
    * Help clean up dishes in the kitchen.
    * Provide and create new ideas for entertaining and teaching the children at the house. These ideas can focus on workshops, art, crafts, games, sports and teaching English.
    * Teaching English to the older children is very important because the more English they are able to learn the better chance they have to get a job in tourism. One of the highest employment sectors in Costa Rica.

  • Highlights

Daycare centers have informal educational programs that are oriented to children under twelve years of age. The Madre del Redentor daycare center has requested the help of volunteers because the services that are provided are becoming higher and higher in demand. The reason for this is most families who require this type of service live well below the poverty line. As a result the mothers of these families are being forced into the workforce and cannot care for their children as they use to. In addition, the government has provided small grants to some of the daycares but not to all so staff resources are limited.

There are approximately 14 children at Madre del Redentor, daycare and all are under the age of 12. Hermana Orilia, would greatly benefit from having extra assistance to help ensure that children's needs are met, that meals are served on time and that new and interesting games can be introduced.

Volunteers are also needed to take on side projects that Hermana Orilia, does not have time to facilitate. As a volunteer you would be asked to work with Hermana Orilia, to plan and implement different programs and activities. The volunteer would have the opportunity to work with the other people at the daycare, in taking care of the children when their mothers have to work. What an enriching experience, to be able to give a little time to these underprivileged children and at the same time provide much needed relief and support to very dedicated staff.

  • Qualifications

Volunteers are required to have previous experience working with children within this age group. They must be willing to learn as much Spanish as possible during their four week language training with BaseCamp Volunteer Abroad, because only a few of the children,(if any), will understand English.
