Highlights

Tyodua Mayami Vidalaya is a government funded school that was created to help provide more Nepali youth with the opportunity to receive a basic education. This school provides classes for over 800 youth from grades one to ten. Students who attend Tyodua Mayami Vidalya are taught a number of different classes such as English, social studies, mathematics and science.
Access to education is a major factor that limits the opportunities for many people in Nepal to receive an education. According to UNICEF, in 2003 only 57% of people in Nepal were able to read and write. Increasing educational opportunities for people in Nepal is important to help develop fundamental skills and training.

Each year the enrolment at Tyodua Mayami Vidalaya continues to increase yet the number of teachers and resources available continue to decline. Volunteers are needed to work along side the teachers to help organize, implement and deliver lessons.
This placement needs volunteers to help teach English, as hearing and practicing English from people who have English as their first language is very valuable to Nepalese students.

Qualifications

A solid background and knowledge of the English language would be an asset for volunteers at this school. It would also be beneficial to the school and the volunteer if the volunteer has had experience working with children in the past and teaching or instructing groups.

Program Fees Include:

Upon arrival in country our staff will pick you up at the airport and return you to our Orientation Center for a safety briefing and general country orientation. For this program you are required to complete one - 4 weeks of language training and orientation which is included in the cost of the program. At the end of that week you will transfer to your placement to begin volunteering. Our staff are available to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week should you require help of any kind.

It is important that volunteers are patient as the children are easily excitable, especially the younger ones. It is also important that you are comfortable with public speaking as you will be leading large classes in their lessons.

If you are from 16-18 years old you may apply for placements near our Volunteer Abroad Office and Residence, so that we are able to give you more support. Both students and professionals are needed for placements in all our countries.
