  • Description

As a volunteer at Carlos Jose Salinas, you will be assigned to work with a teacher from the school to teach English, or help a teacher while he or she is teaching other subjects to their students. You may also have the opportunity to organize an after-school program to help the children with homework and play with them.

Since the school lacks an English program, volunteers are expected to plan their lessons and prepare activities to help students learn the material. These activities and lessons should be focused on specific communication tools that the children need to learn, such as introductions, numbers, and so forth. The teacher accompanying the volunteer will take care of classroom management, but volunteers always provide the language component. In addition to creating lesson plans and delivering the lesson, volunteers are expected to keep track of what is taught at each grade, so future volunteers can follow up.
Volunteers may also be able to assist in preschool classes with the young children who range in age from 3-5 years old.

Occasionally, volunteers may be asked to assist with administrative work, developing lesson plans, and creating posters and other teaching materials during their placement.

  • Highlights

Carlos José Salinas is an elementary school that provides preschool and primary classes to youth in the rural community of Dulce Nombre. The school offers classes that teach the basic foundations in numeracy, literacy and socialization because it is an important part of a child's development. The role of this school is to promote early childhood education, to provide more opportunities for children to be able to attend school and to help increase the literacy rates in their community.

Carlos Jose Salinas, cannot afford all the permanent staff they need to help the children; there are many areas in which more help is needed. In addition, these kids love interacting with people. It boosts their enthusiasm and self-esteem. It also makes them very happy and teaches them the value of cooperation and friendship, helping them feel less alienated from society.
Teaching English is the biggest need from volunteers at this placement, however, there are many young children and a basic understanding of Spanish is perfect to teach the little kids the fundamentals.

  • Qualifications

A volunteer teaching at this school is not required to be a trained teacher. Any volunteer who is interested in working with children and providing classroom assistance would an excellent candidate for this program.
Although not essential, volunteers that have had experience working with children in the past will have an easier time at this placement. Also, experience developing lesson plans and teaching young children will come in handy. For ESL teachers, a good understanding of the English language is necessary.
