  • Description

As an Speech Therapist at the Autism Awareness Care and Training Center you will be a vital component to their team of professionals and caregivers. During your time there you will be asked to share your knowledge of Speech Therapy with the staff and caregivers. You will also be asked to help with the implementation of various communication methods such as sign language and picture exchange communication systems.

Speech therapy volunteers will assist in the classrooms daily to help build communication skills between the students and their caregivers. Volunteers can work with some of the systems already being implemented such as sign language or the PECS system. Implementation and consistency is very important. Speech therapy volunteers can initiate training with the caregivers and staff to help with the effectiveness of what is being taught to the students. One-on-one time with the students and their caregivers will also be a very effective and useful implementation of communication skills.

Volunteers may also be asked to help the children during their meals and assist with other daily tasks at the center such as cleaning, preparing meals, changing diapers or helping assist children who need extra attention and care.

  • Highlights

The Autism Awareness Care and Training Center is an organization that teachers children with Autism and provides them with a safe place to learn. Their aim is to help these individuals reach their highest potential by utilizing a number of different therapies to reach that goal.

The Autism Awareness Care and Training Center is looking for a volunteer to help teachers and care givers conduct Speech Therapy classes for the children. Speech Therapy is important because it helps people with Autism to gain language skills and other forms of communication. The children at the center are being taken care of by caregivers and other staff, but they need assistant in teaching these skills. Each child is at a different developmental stage, and has different abilities and challenges, so lessons need to be customized.

With the implementation and practice of these methods, trained volunteers can help the children more accurately convey to their caregiver their needs and work towards more effective communication. These activities can help autistic children gain self-care, social, and communication skills that are necessary for everyday functioning.
