  • Highlights

Hogar Infantil Comunitario - La Mascota is non-profit centre, that offers skills training in a technical school to ninety boys and girls. This skills training is designed to help the students make their own way in life and earn a decent wage. Some examples of courses the students may choose from are: carpentry, baking and sewing.

The main goal of Hogar Infantil Comunitario is to educate as many at-risk children as possible, given their current resources. Staff at Hogar Infantil Comunitario are working hard to improve their facilities, but the support they receive from the municipality of Diriamba and the Family Ministry Board is not enough. They wish to support children in reaching their full potential, and to become responsible, honest citizens by teaching them the skills they need to succeed and giving them the courage to create their own opportunities and make a difference in their lives.

Additionally, to make up for the lack of resources available to schools in poor areas and to compensate for the disadvantages that poor students face, Hogar Infantil Comunitario offers 4 to 5 hours of after school reinforcement and enrichment activities each day. Since most of the students are working children, Hogar Infantil Comunitario has to be able to offer them a different schedule, so they can attend their classes but continue to work so that they can help to support their families. Hogar Infantil Comunitario also provides children with one nutritious meal per day.

Since they rely upon a miniscule budget from the Nicaraguan government, Hogar Infantil Comunitario cannot afford to pay full time teachers or social workers. Currently, they employ two part-time teachers, one who comes in the mornings and the other who comes in the afternoons.

The majority of students come from disadvantaged families that have a great deal of financial problems and the students are often victims of abuse. As a result, Hogar Infantil Comunitario, is looking for a social worker, at-risk youth worker or psychologist to help the children with issues they may be facing.
