Description

Volunteers will be asked to assist in the procedures at the shelter:

* When a stray animal is found, go with qualified staff to collect the animal and bring it back to the shelter.
* If an animal is injured help the team to give the animal the appropriate medicine to reduce pain and be involved (based on experience) with helping to address the injury.
* Help to register the new animal into the clinic and ensure that there is a clean pen available for the animal. Complete all paper work and start the paper work for the adoption process.
* Spend time with the animals giving them TLC,(tender loving care - both cats and dogs).
* Clean cages out and ensure the animals have a fresh and comfortable place to sleep.
* Walk the dogs regularly. Update walking schedules to ensure all animals are getting the proper exercise they require.
* Feed the animals morning and afternoon.
* Sort and organize supplies such as food stocks, bedding, towels etc.
* Help promote their adopt a pet program.
* Motivate and educate people to take care their pets or whatever animal.

Highlights

This placement needs volunteers to help control the huge number of unwanted and abandoned cats and dogs in Costa Rica. Costa Rica's former solution to animal overpopulation was to poison the animals residing in overcrowded areas. AHPPA's sterilization program has put a stop to this terrible practice. Through low and no cost sterilization programs plus education about the importance of sterilization, AHPPA hopes to decrease the number of abandoned animals; they need help in order to accomplish this goal. AHPPA is the only recognized and certified animal shelter in Costa Rica. This organization is also attempting to start an educational program for school age children in the area, in the hopes of improving awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering animals, plus humane treatment of pets. Also they need volunteers because at the shelter they have around 75 dogs and 40 cats that need love, attention, someone who one want to share with them time, go for walk around the shelter, provide animals food and a clean place to life.

Qualifications

Volunteers with a background in veterinary medicine will be very helpful, but volunteers of all educational backgrounds are welcome.People who really identified with animals, take care of them, provide real love and attention and patient.Also volunteer needs to be dynamic and active.

Program Fees Include:

Upon arrival in country our staff will pick you up at the airport and return you to our Orientation Center for a safety briefing and general country orientation. For this program you are required to complete one - 4 weeks of language training and orientation which is included in the cost of the program. At the end of that week you will transfer to your placement to begin volunteering. Our staff are available to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week should you require help of any kind.

We believe everyone can contribute by volunteering. Recent graduates from high school, college or university, professionals taking a career break, recent retirees, individuals or groups who are interested in a change and the chance to enrich their own life and the lives of others. If you are 18 years or older you can apply for any of the placements available. If you are from 16-18 years old you may apply for placements near our Volunteer Abroad Office and Residence, so that we are able to give you more support. Both students and professionals are needed for placements in all our countries.
