Description

Volunteers need to do a psychological evaluation of the children and then develop and implement a work plan for each child and/or their family. Also the volunteer would be required to create workshops in order to teach the children about the existence of sexual abuse and the different forms it may involve (do plays with puppets as an example). The kids need to be made aware that there are all kinds of abuse and how to deal with the problem or problems if they are occurring or have taken place. Finally, volunteers would be asked to develop workshops dedicated to the parents ( as there are many cases of fathers hitting their wives). These workshops would be held Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays mornings.
There's a lot to do. The staff at Villa Ticca appreciates volunteers who are capable and enjoy taking the initiative within their programs. Volunteers are also encouraged to create and implement different stimulating activities for the children.

The Volunteer would be expected to develop and conduct workshops with the mothers. The topics would relate to helping the women to increase their knowledge in numerous ways to help improve their current situations and help them to build their self esteem.

Highlights

This children's center relies on the help of volunteers to aide in caring for children from low-to-no income neighbourhoods in the South of Quito. Most of the children at Villa Ticca come from dysfunctional homes. Violence at their homes is a common thing. Sometimes children come with bruises on their bodies, and they won't tell what happened to them.

After a deep study made by Villa Ticca's coordinator with past Social Workers, it became possible to meet family groups with problems at Villa Ticca. These are identified groups with whom a psychologist is needed to do follow up appointments, and from there, start working with the groups on a permanent basis. It is important that the volunteer psychologist who takes the cases develops their own personalized work plan for each child. This psychological help will be very valuable for the positive effect that it will bring to the children at the centre. Normally Villa Ticca needs this kind of help constantly.

The staff of Villa Ticca is always interested in upgrading the services they provide, in any way possible to the children and their mothers, in the hope of helping to alleviate any type of danger to which they may be exposed.

Qualifications

The volunteer should be a qualified, experienced psychologist or at least be in the last year of their psychology training at the university. The volunteer needs to have a good knowledge of the Spanish Language.

Program Fees Include:

Upon arrival in country our staff will pick you up at the airport and return you to our Orientation Center for a safety briefing and general country orientation. For this program you are required to complete one - 4 weeks of language training and orientation which is included in the cost of the program. At the end of that week you will transfer to your placement to begin volunteering. Our staff are available to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week should you require help of any kind.
