  • Description

Volunteers will be able to experience all aspects of how a rural clinic operates. Specific tasks may include updating the medical records, organizing patient flow, weighing patients, taking vital signs, giving injections (if medically trained), and providing first aid training.

You may also have the opportunity to create and give presentations on hygiene, nutrition, sexual health, leprosy, and any other topics that the volunteer and clinic staff feel is relevant and will benefit the locals.

You may also be asked to assist with tasks in the compound such as tidying the house, gardening, teaching and involvement in different activities of the community school.

  • Highlights

In 2009, an abandoned club house in Khahare was renovated into a local health clinic. The clinic provides services to the community of Khahare and many surrounding villages.

The clinic is run every Thursday starting at 10:00 am and remains open until all of the patients have been seen by the doctor. Most patients visiting the clinic suffer from chest infections, skin problems and abdominal issues. The clinic also acts as a referral services for those with more serious diseases or medical issues.

This clinic is very important to the people of Khahare and the surrounding communities as it enables them to receive proper health care services that they may not otherwise be able to access. Many of the clinics and hospitals in Nepal are located in the larger cities that are a day or two walking distance away. This means that most small community populations do not receive medical care unless it is an emergency. There are many diseases and illness that have been treated by rural community clinics such as this one.

Volunteers are needed and would be greatly appreciated. Both the volunteers and the staff would benefit by sharing their knowledge and previous experiences. Also, the volunteers who do not have medical training would find this placement to be a rewarding and worthwhile endeavour in a very important community clinic.

  • Qualifications

Volunteers with medical training including doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, and first aid teachers would be greatly welcomed at this project. However, medical experience is not a requirement.
