  • Description

Volunteers will mainly help with promoting literacy to the children that arrive at the library each day. Volunteers will work one on one with the children to help them read and understand the books. There are many different levels of reading books in the library and volunteers will help choose books based on ability.

Volunteers will also coordinate group reading programs. They may read a story out loud, or have the children take turns reading in a group. They may also help children create their own stories and illustrations to go with them!
Twice a week, the library offers literacy classes to adults. Volunteers can assist the library staff with teaching these adults. They will help them learn to read and will also be involved with simple mathematics. Most of the adults that come to the library are market workers and are seeking help with money exchange.

French speaking volunteers are especially welcome! The library has a selection of French language books that are available for volunteers to use. Some of the children have a special interest in French and this would be a great opportunity for French speaking volunteers to share their knowledge and love for the language!

Volunteers are encouraged to create their own programs. Educational games and activities are always welcome. These can be centered around counting, weather, days of the week, etc. Volunteers can also help with sports programs and recreational activities.

  • Highlights

The Nima Maamobi Gale Community Library, opened in 1998 in Accra, offering literacy classes for all and numerous outreach activities including football for girls and boys. Nutritional diets, hygiene and scholarship programs meet specific needs while arts and crafts, dancing and drumming groups plus a childrens choir offer opportunities for personal expression and outlets for community involvement.
