During this placement you would be helping the boys one-to-one with their homework. You would also teach weekly study skills workshops, which you would plan, organize, and implement.
Your days at your placement would most likely begin with you planning your study skills workshops. This would involve brainstorming topics (which could range from memorization techniques to stress management to organizational strategies to goal-setting); plus gather the necessary materials and create presentation materials such as posters, and hand-out worksheets.
Once a week in the afternoon, you would present these workshops to the boys in AIDENICA´s common room, and they would be about an hour in length. The boys would be split into two groups, one group of younger kids and one group of teens, so the presentations would need to be adjusted for each age group. You would deliver the children's workshop on one afternoon, and the teen workshop the following day.
During the afternoons when you were not teaching the workshops, you would be available to help the boys one-to-one with their homework, spending about ten to thirty minutes with each boy that needed help. For those that were finished or did not have homework, you could offer to read with them so they could practice their reading skills.
You may also have the opportunity to help the boys with their chores and/or play sports with them. While doing these activities, by demonstrating an energetic, happy and sincere manner you would be providing,(by example), a positive role model to them.
AIDENICA, or Asociacion para la Atencion Integral de Niños de la Calle (Association for the Comprehensive Care of Street Children), is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of street children. They run a home, called Casa Hogar AIDENICA, which has accommodations for up to forty children. While on the streets, most of these boys were involved with drugs and delinquent behaviour. The boys live at the house and do chores, attend high school, get help with their homework, learn vocational skills, and ideally by the age of 18 the boys will have learned enough to become self-sufficient.
In all of Peru there are about three million children who are working in the streets. They are usually driven there by poverty and/or to escape family violence; forcing them to help themselves and/or their families earn a living by selling and begging. Once in the streets, they are often subject to abuse from older children and also usually forced to drop out of school. Some end up in gangs and/or become addicted to sniffing glue in order to survive the streets.
This organization operates with a very small staff and has few resources. The boys at AIDENICA would really benefit by having individual attention with their schoolwork thus assisting in their rehabilitation and development. This is rarely possible at the present time due to lack of staff. Many of these boys are behind in their studies due to their time on the streets, so they are trying to catch up and some have hopes to even excel in school.
Some of the boys will lack proper literary skills and may need help practising reading and writing. Others will have difficulty concentrating due to the lasting effects of sniffing glue and might need help and encouragement learning how to focus. Most will need help with common subjects such as math and science. Since English is your fluent language, you will be invaluable in helping them with their English homework!
Most importantly, as a volunteer, you can stimulate them towards academic studies ,as well as, help them to increase their self-confidence in their ability to learn. Thus motivating them to work hard in school will be a big step in developing their overall self-esteem.
Experience teaching or tutoring school subjects would be beneficial to volunteers interested in this placement. As well, a strong understanding of core elementary and high school subjects, such as science, math, geography, and English, would be essential.

We believe international volunteering promotes cross-cultural learning that helps create global awareness, understanding between cultures and provides the platform for positive change. Our volunteers have taught in schools, provided disaster relief support for the International Red Cross, conducted essential research to improve the management strategies of threatened environments, built homes for impoverished people, provided vocational training and programs for street kids and have worked in co-operation with hundreds of local organizations to distribute aid and improve the quality of life for people throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America.
