  • Description

Plant trees, host educational seminars with locals, contribute to improved stoves and water improvement projects, assist in the harvesting and planting of crops and assist locals in finding methods to effectively use their land without destroying the environment.

Interacting with people living in the communities and playing with their children.

  • Highlights

The Economia de Patio (Backyard Economy) Project currently works with six rural communities in the dry zone of Diriamba. These communities rely upon the cultivation of coffee, beans, corn, fruit and vegetables to survive. A recent study conducted by Adeca has shown that soils in the area have become badly eroded, deforestation has accelerated in recent years as a result of a demand for firewood and droughts have become more frequent in the area. This has led to a decrease in crop cultivation and a decrease in vegetable species. As a result, the population of these communities suffer from unemployment, malnutrition and other health problems.

The Economia de Patio Project aims to contribute to a higher standard of living in which individuals will be able to better cultivate and sell crops, while at the same time maintaining their traditional cultivation practices and respecting the environment. This project also aims to provide safe drinking water, access to sanitary bathrooms and enhance traditional stoves to improve the health of rural farmers and their families.

Because Adeca is a non-profit organization and runs purely off private donations, volunteers are always needed to help with their projects. Volunteers are needed to work with the members of Adeca to help assist with crop development, harvesting crops, reforestation projects, ensuring that plant deliveries are completed on time, construction of viviendas (small homes), water sanitation systems and improved stoves.
