  • Description

Your primary responsibilities would be -- researching potential sources of funding and applying for grants. You may also be required to compile a manual of grant writing tips and resources for future staff use.
You may have the opportunity to visit the childrens libraries from time to time to help with homework and program activities.

  • Highlights

La Semilla (The Seed) is an organization that works with children of low-income families. In order to combat the fact that many of the poorest children get the lowest grades in school, most of their work is dedicated to improving the level of education among these children. They address this problem on many fronts: leadership building exercises, helping with homework, working with child labourers, teaching about health and hygiene, and also working with the mothers of these children to promote well-being and increase literacy. They strive to ensure that children grow up to lead healthy lives and provide a positive future for Peru.

La Semilla operates three children's libraries, where the children attend twice a week to practice reading and story-writing. Their stories are published and kept in the library for other children to read and enjoy. This greatly increases the children's confidence in themselves and their abilities. At the same time, it is therapeutic for the children to participate in the story-writing workshops because they are able to tell their own stories of their life experiences.

The program is a response to the plight of political violence that has affected this country and includes strategies to improve school learning and also the prevention of violence and abuse of children and adolescents. This project works in the rehabilitation of displaced children and adolescents; facilitating communication in a warm and safe environment. Volunteers are needed to help promote and secure funding in order to keep these programs active.
