  • Description

Volunteers will develop and teach lesson plans to each grade at the school in 45 minutes or one hour blocks. There is no existing English curriculum to follow at the school, so volunteers will have to compose their own lessons. The lesson plans for the primary grades will follow themes, such as, talking about family, hobbies and the weather and will place a major focus on interactive learning and conversation skills. For the kindergarten classes, lesson plans should be very basic, with many games and songs to reinforce common vocabulary.

  • Highlights

Colegio Senor de los Milagros, directs schools run under the Peruvian Ministry of Education, which endeavors to provide free and universal education to all Peruvian children up to Grade 6. This particular school has dedicated and passionate teachers who aim to provide an integrative approach to education to the students, focusing not only on academics but also on personal development. They focus on themes such as self-respect, compassion for others, nutrition and health, plus concerns for the environment, and try to incorporate these values into their daily lessons. The staff here are also very intent on trying to have the parents of the students become more proactive and involved in their children's education, as parental non-involvement,(due to numerous situations in the home), is a prevalent problem for many of the students, hindering them from achieving their full potential at school.

This school once had an English teacher, but the government department responsible for education was unable to continue to provide funding for this position. Currently, the children only receive very basic English lessons from their teachers, who do not speak English themselves. In Peru, the ability to speak English is very important for future educational and career opportunities, as this society is relying more and more on tourism and international business connections. For the children at Colegio SeƱor de los Milagros,(many of whom come from family and economic backgrounds that do not provide them with many opportunities for future success), being able to speak and understand some English is of tremendous importance. It will help them to succeed in high school, and eventually enter university.
