    Volunteers as doctors can become involved with HIV testing and the documentation of the results of the tests. Experienced volunteers as doctors may be able to help counsel patients with respect to test results.

    * Helping in consultations after patients have gone through the outpatients department system
    * Recommend or advice if injections are needed and then giving the injections
    * Interpreting results from the lab. and advice on the next step of action
    * Advice on medications for patients to the pharmacy
    * Caring for patients on the wards
    * Updating the medical records with their suggestions and notes
    * Providing pre-natal and post-natal care
    * Help to deliver babies and give mothers advice and information about caring for their new born babies

    Doctor Volunteers will also have the chance to travel with the hospital staff on outreach services to the surrounding communities. This will be a great chance for volunteers to explore the area and to experience Ghanaian community life. Duties on these visits may include organizing patient flow, providing first aid training and working with the medical team from the urban aid clinic to treat common diseases in Ghana like malaria and the various other common diseases.

    The hospital also does outreach services to local schools and community groups. Volunteers will be able to create and give presentations on hygiene, nutrition, sexual health, HIV, malaria, and any other topic that the volunteer and clinical staff feel is relevant and will benefit the local population.

  • Highlights

    Volunteers are always welcome and needed in this busy, high paced clinic. The clinic provides services for many women and the staff need help moving patients efficiently through the different clinical areas.

    The Salvation Army is important in Accra because there is a lack of resources in the area for pregnant women. Although hospitals and clinics are available, these are usually not affordable for the general population. The Salvation Army supports women who may not have access to safe and hygienic places to give birth. Ghana has a high rate of child mortality thus the work that this organization accomplishes is very important for both mothers and newborn babies.

    Volunteers are also needed to help give educational sessions to patients and the community. Information about pre and post-natal care, breastfeeding and HIV prevention are very applicable topics for the types of patients this clinic takes care of. General talks on malaria, nutrition, hand hygiene, and sexual health are also valuable.

    This clinic would benefit greatly from the assistance of volunteers who are interested in the health care field and are willing to help wherever needed.

Volunteers willing to learn the local language and practice speaking it often find that they are able to participate in more activities.
