Description

Dental assistants have to sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment, they have to prepare and lay out the instruments and materials required to treat each patient. If the dentist so requires, volunteers have to obtain an update patients dental records. Assistants make patients comfortable in the dental chair and prepare them for treatment. During dental procedures, assistants work alongside the dentist to provide assistance. They hand instruments and materials to dentists and keep patients' mouths dry and clear by using suction hoses or other devices. They also may apply topical anesthetics to gums or cavity-preventive agents to teeth, remove excess cement used in the filling process, and place dental dams to isolate teeth for treatment.

Centro de Salud has several medical clinics throughout the city of Quito. They are striving to serve their community with the proper and necessary medical attention otherwise unavailable were these clinics not in these areas, or providing the medical care for the prices they perform them at (at times for free).

Centro de Salud is an under-funded government run center that is always looking for help in the area of medical attention for the community. Knowledgeable people with experience in these fields can greatly aid the doctors. Dental assistants are helpful in providing an extra hand to the dentist at centro de salud for better service to the communities that they are serving.

To have access to this placement, candidates must be student of dentistry or being in their last years of dentistry school.

Program Fees Include:

Upon arrival in country our staff will pick you up at the airport and return you to our Orientation Center for a safety briefing and general country orientation. For this program you are required to complete one - 4 weeks of language training and orientation which is included in the cost of the program. At the end of that week you will transfer to your placement to begin volunteering. Our staff are available to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week should you require help of any kind.

If you are from 16-18 years old you may apply for placements near our Volunteer Abroad Office and Residence, so that we are able to give you more support. Both students and professionals are needed for placements in all our countries.
