    * Creating educational games and songs to enhance their skills
    * Finding possible crafts and other activities for the classes
    * Decorating the classrooms

    There are many side-jobs available at Good Hope. You could prepare extra-curricular activities for the children, help to clean the school and/or orphanage or even read stories or help the children with their homework.

    Good Hope is trying to become a sustainable organization and is in the process of starting new projects. You could help in the garden where they are growing vegetables to feed the kids and/or feed the chickens who provide eggs. Recently, they are trying to recruit more sponsors. You may be asked to help in organizing information to stimulate this support.

  • Highlights

    Good Hope Orphanage is a home for children in the Arusha area who are orphans and do not have a nuclear family to care for them. The goal of Good Hope Orphanage is to provide a loving and safe environment for children who are destitute in and around the Arusha community. The primary objective is to not only provide a home but provide each child with the skills that they will need to be independent and provide for themselves. This goal is achieved through the creation of both an orphanage and the school where the children attend to learn various lessons.

    The orphanage center and school were started in May 2006 by the Mohammed family, who own the school and orphanage compound in Ngusero. The compound consists of an orphanage building and a school building. The school started out with one teacher, Veronica, and one classroom, now they have grown to include four teachers and four classrooms.

    Good Hope Orphanage and School needs volunteers to assist in caring for the children and teaching them thus helping them expand their knowledge. The children have 2 local mamas and 4 teachers who raise them and teach the kids good Tanzanian manners plus make sure they are attending school on a day basis. The mamas and the teachers are working really hard to make sure that the children are safe, well nourished, happy and receiving an education; this requires a great deal of attention and with only 2 mamas and 4 teachers to provide for their many needs the work is non ending.

    Volunteers would be very much appreciated to share in this workload, as well as stimulating for the children who always enjoy meeting foreign people and thus expanding their knowledge and experiences. They would like to have volunteers who have knowledge in childcare work as well as teaching knowledge and be able to exchange with the mamas and teachers the different ways to provide good care and support to the children and students.

  • Qualifications

    Teaching knowledge is preferable although volunteers do not need any specific qualifications or skills, except for a love of children and a desire to make a difference in someone else's life. Volunteers should be ready for a challenge and be willing to put in some hard work.
