AYUSA students are placed with carefully selected host families throughout the many beautiful provinces of France. Adjustment to host family life and French culture will be assisted by a local representative. Students will receive a pre-departure orientation in their home country to prepare them for the exciting study abroad adventure ahead.
On our academic programs in France, students will attend a local French High school called a Lycée. Education is a very important aspect of a French teen's life and many hours a week are devoted to schoolwork. Your curriculum will be based on age, past course work and language ability. Typically, students will take the following subjects: French literature, physical education, history, geography, mathematics, science, English, and a foreign language (German, Spanish or Italian). The school may also offer classes in music, theater and art to round out your studies. Academic Year, Fall Semester and Spring Semester programs require two years of high school French language study, or the demonstrated equivalent as classes will be conducted in French. This is a great way to improve your language skills and return home fluent in French!
French teens spend a lot of time socializing with their friends and family. Families often enjoy long dinners together during the weekend. These meals are a great time to share experiences, learn new traditions and try new culinary delights. Be sure to ask your host family for the recipe of your favorite French dish so you can recreate it on your return home. The French possess a joie de vivre, a love of life and a love of animals. Many families have pets as part of the household -- in fact, pets outnumber children in France!
The French love to watch team sports, such as soccer and rugby, but tend to participate in individual sports, including: cycling, fishing, tennis, hiking, skiing, and sailing. The annual Tour de France cycling race and the French Open tennis tournament are popular national events. In addition to sports, popular activities include visiting museums, attending plays and concerts, or socializing at a local café.
