  • Description

    This project is unique in that we actively help to save endangered wildlife species by initiating, implementing and managing some of the most exciting monitoring projects in Southern Africa. Our work is focused on Cheetah, Wild dog, Black Rhino & Vultures. We also monitor Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Hyena, White Rhino and Buffalo.

    As a volunteer, you will be actively involved in all the day-to-day aspects of the work we do including:
    * Tracking and locating endangered species - we will ensure that you are efficient in the use of the radio telemetry tracking equipment by the time you leave
    * GPS mapping of sightings - you will be taught how to use the GPS
    * Animal behavioral research
    * Creation and updating of animal identikits
    * Game counts

    Other activities you may be involved in while working with the team:

    * Radio collaring of wild animals
    * Relocation & re-introduction of game
    * Night excursions to monitor animals like the hyena
    * Vulture counts and nest surveys
    * Bird ringing
    * Alien plant control
    * Community conservation work

    We are an experienced, passionate, hands-on team and are looking for volunteers who want their contribution to be effectively utilized in genuine conservation efforts. If want to make a real difference and have an experience of a lifetime, then come and join our team!

    Volunteer Testimonial

    "The two months that I spent in Zululand were some of the best of my life. I arrived from England pretty unsure of what to expect out of the project and myself, and left a more confident person with a fascinating insight into all aspects of wildlife conservation. During my time with Chris I was lucky enough to be on the ground team for black rhino, elephant and cheetah darting with the view to attach tracking devices for data collection in the future. These were especially exciting moments of my time in the reserve, but perhaps even more special were the times driving in the bakkie and coming across an elusive leopard or buffalo unexpectedly I was completely fizzed by Chris's accounts of his own experiences, and my passion for being a wildlife vet was reassured. All I can say is that if you're willing to put the effort in (with some rather early mornings and just as late nights socializing with the team around a braai) you will gain some amazing life experiences and make friends for life. I am already planning my next trip back..."
