This 3.5-week study abroad program will examine the relationship between global health and sustainable natural and man-made environments, integrating diverse natural, biological, and social science perspectives. Assessment will be delivered through educational travel, field trips, active participation, presentations and seminars, and coursework exercises.
This program can be combined with the 10-day program in Fiji or New Zealand.
Program Objectives:
By the end of the program students will:
1. Be able to address relationships between human societies and their environments from multiple disciplinary perspectives, and to understand how human-environment interactions influence lifestyle choices and health;
2. Understand the importance of biodiverse natural environments to global health, and address impacts of human actions on natural systems, and human responses to those changes;
3. Explain the history and enduring relationship between colonialism and the contemporary health of indigenous populations in Australia;
4. Identify and evaluate the challenges of maintaining health that might be particular to indigenous cultures in Australia;
5. Develop an understanding of ecological education practices, integrated natural resource management, and conservation actions throughout Australia;
6. Understand the natural history, biogeography, ecological diversity, and related social and cultural contexts of Australia;
7. Be able to transfer lessons learned in Australia to the U.S.;
8. Be able to articulate the importance of healthy lifestyle practices to the general public;
9. Work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary research team.
* You will begin in Sydney, the largest metropolis in Australia, then head to the remote Northern Territory, Australia's real outback
* Experience Aboriginal culture and it's 50,000 - 80,000 year history - the world's oldest surviving culture
* You will spend much of your time (~70%) out in the field, visiting and observing Australia first-hand. We believe that students learn from study abroad experiences both in and outside of the classroom.

The mission of AUIP is to nurture and foster a global citizenry that respects the diverse cultures and environments of the world in which we live. More specifically, we hope that students who participate in programs with AUIP are better prepared to use this global knowledge in their home community with both short-term and long-term implications. No prior knowledge of the subject areas or environmental issues is assumed, and the courses and programs are suitable for all undergraduate students.
