Highlights
Sail Training Association Netherlands (STAN)
The STAN is a nonprofit organization which, for over 25 years, is focused on organizing so-called Sail Training voyages, mainly for young people between the age of 15 and 25 years old.
During these voyages, the youngsters, trainees as we call them, are brought together as a group on board of a seagoing sailing vessel to be fully integrated into the crew. This way they get the chance to experience what life at sea is, meaning work, learn and actually living at sea. The learning part doesnt just relate to the maritime and nautical aspects, but especially concerns educational aspects related to developing team spirit, perseverance, leadership and social skills.
A scientific study conducted by the University of Edinburgh, has shown that the experience of a sail training voyage has a very positive effect on young people, not only as individuals but especially as a group of people, with love for the sea and marine life.
