Location
Spain: Palma de Mallorca
Program Duration
2-4 weeks
Dates
July 1-28, 2012
This ArchaeoSpain program is designed for High School students currently in grades 11 and 12 (16-17 years old).
The participants at the archaeological excavation of Pollentia on the island of Mallorca will work as field crew on the ancient settlement of the city alongside archaeologists from local government agencies and university students. The object of our work will be the continuing excavation of the city's Forum. Participants at this site will contribute to the research of the introduction and development of the Roman culture across the Mediterranean and specifically in the Balearic Islands.
ArchaeoSpain groups interact in all aspects of the project, including excavation, mapping, photography, and the conservation and cataloguing of artifacts. Archaeologists will also hold several conferences on Pollentia's archaeology, plus a few workshops that cover drawing pottery by hand as well as software to produce archaeological diagrams.
The work, due to the summer heat and the physical nature of the excavation, will be demanding. Those that wish to join should be in reasonable physical condition and in good health. ArchaeoSpain will also make time to experience Spain away from the shovels and picks by relaxing on the island's beaches, sitting at a cafe, or touring several nearby pre-historic, Roman and Medieval sites of interest.
ArchaeoSpain at Pollentia is one of the only fieldwork programs specifically designed for high school students.
All students are expected to engage in all archaeological activities during the program. While we do not require that participants speak Spanish, they will be immersed in the language daily. Thus ArchaeoSpain hopes that you take advantage of this situation to learn some basics or improve your spoken Spanish. Just imagine - you could leave Spain knowing how to say wheelbarrow in Spanish and Catalan.
