  • Highlights

The program takes place over nine weeks in total. Students will spend the first three weeks in Athens, will travel to Rome for an intensive field visit of three days' duration, and conclude their studies in Syracuse, Italy, located on the island of Sicily.

    While in Athens
Students first participate in the summer program of the Arcadia Center for Hellenic, Mediterranean, and Balkan Studies: "Of Gods and the City . . . History, Art, and Architecture in Archaic and Classical Greece." Visits to such locations as: Olympia; Delphi; Isthmia and Nemea; Corinth; Sparta and Messene; Marathon and Thermopylai; and various sites in Athens are an important experiential part of the program.

    While in Rome
Students arrive together by air to Rome for three days of field study, exploring the eternal city, the Vatican Museum, and St. Peter's.

    While in Syracuse
Students travel by air to Catania, where they will be met by staff from the Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences. The six-credit program takes place at the center, which is located in the heart of the city of Syracuse on the ancient island of Ortigia. It consists of two courses: "Ancient Sicily: Aeneas to Justinian" and "Art and Archaeology of Ancient Sicily." While in Sicily, students will visit Agrigento, Piazza Armerina and Morgantina, Taormina and Giardini Naxos, Catania, and various sites in Syracuse.

    Throughout the Program
All students undertake a one-credit journaling class, exploring attitudes to the ancient past in Greece and Italy, which is jointly assessed by Athens and Sicily faculty. Co-curricular cultural experiences are integrated into the program's structure and consitute a major part of the learning experience.

    Housing
Housing is included and guaranteed in Athens, Rome, and Syracuse. Housing in Athens and Syracuse will consist of shared apartments provided for Arcadia program students. During the field components in all three cities, students can expect to stay in hostels or modest hotels.
