Italy
Share |

Location
Italy: Syracuse

Term
Summer

Dates
May - June; July - August

  • Description

Spend your summer break in Italy immersing yourself into the language, culture, and lifestyle of locals. Earn academic credit at the Mediterranean Center for Arts & Sciences (MCAS). The school offers a wide range of liberal arts courses which, combined with academic fieldtrips (included in the program fee and an integral part of the program in Sicily), enable students to explore the diversity of the Mediterranean World from a unique perspective and experience the richly varied culture of this fascinating island.

    Orientation and Cultural Programs

Upon arrival, you will meet the Arcadia and Mediterranean Center staff; participate in a comprehensive orientation, and move into your housing. All students enrolling in the Arcadia program in Syracuse will be expected to attend orientation. At this time, academic contracts are signed, expectations are established, basic cultural differences are explained, and practical matters such as internet access, cell phone service, banking, health and safety, rules of conduct, housing issues and emergency contact information are discussed. During the orientation period, you will also have the opportunity to explore your new home, and adjust to your housing.

Programs of Study at the Mediterranean Center include individual academic fieldtrips (see class descriptions for details), but regardless of academic choices and course selections, all students are exposed to the culture of Sicily through two inclusive historical orientation tours of Syracuse and Catania and a guided weekend excursion to the hilltop city of Taormina.

In the summer sessions all Arcadia students are required to take seven or eight credits, selected from any classes on offer, and either the one-credit, fifteen-hour language class or (if the student has elected to take a three-credit or six-credit Italian Language class) the one-credit, fifteen-hour culture class.

The Italy Coordinator Team can answer your questions, help you with the application process, advise on courses and provide instructions on applying for a student visa. They are a great resource to prepare you for what to expect and offer tips on how to maximize your time in Italy.
