Explore the life and times of Alexander the Great during this intensive three-week course. Classroom-based seminars and a full schedule of field-study excursions will carry you back to the life and times of Alexander the Great. Visits to the Greek island of Samos, as well as to the Turkish cities of Ephesos, Priene, and Miletus will help to enhance your understanding of this leader's life, as well as allow you a glimpse of the Greek and Turkish cultures.
The program will begin in Athens, where you will participate in lectures that will introduce you to Alexander and his contemporaries, as well as explore related monuments and museums. We will then head north to Alexander's birthplace and base of power. On the way, we will visit Chaironeia and Pydna, two major battle sites that influenced the rise of power in the north and the demise of democratic Greece. Additionally, you'll have the chance to explore the ruins of excavated cities that once dominated the ancient world.
We will then move on to the Greek island of Samos, famous for its Sanctuary to Hera. Here you will learn about Hellenistic civilization and discover it was a capitalist society not very different from our own!
