  • Description

An in-depth inquiry into Europe and the Islamic world, from their historic links to models for todays political transformations.

Since 1972 the Europe in Transition program has been at the forefront of contemporary European political and social developments. Over the past four years, AEA has revised the curriculum of the program to focus on Europes relationship with Islam. Now, in response to student interest and recent democratic movements changing the Arab world, we have adjusted the program theme to: Europe and Islam: Cultures & Communities.

On this program students examine the complex relationship between Europe and Islam: from their dynamic history and current challenges of cultural plurality in European societies, tomost recentlyshaping political models for todays democratic transitions in the Islamic world. Based in Poland with guided field studies to Turkey and Germany, students learn from faculty at Jagellionian, Tübingen, and Bilgi universities. Guest speakers include some of the activist leaders in Polands peaceful democratic transition 20 years ago, frequently hailed as a potential model for todays North Africa. Students explore the implications of migrations for national and European policies and societies, particularly in local communities in Germany and Poland, examining issues of identity and social stratification of ethnic minorities, class structures, and gender roles. Additionally, students design and conduct an independent research project.
