  • Description

South Africa is a country of extremes: It is a country of arid semideserts and subtropical coastlines; of fertile vineyards and barren snow-capped peaks; of isolated Zulu villages and world-class cosmopolitan cities. This beautiful stage is set for the daily drama of "one of the world's greatest experiments in racial harmony," a post-Apartheid world. It is likely to be not only eye opening and fascinating, but also challenging and intense. Despite a well-developed infrastructure compared to some other countries in the region, South Africa is haunted by townships stuffed with too many people, hunger, poverty and one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world.

Despite such a conflicted history, South Africa undoubtedly has many natural and historical attractions. Visitors will be relieved to find such a temperate climate on what is normally a very hot continent. South Africa is home to some magnificent wildlife such as the African elephant, white rhino, hippopotamus, giraffe and cheetah. World renown for their wine, South Africans have a fierce pride in their beautiful and varied country.

Volunteer projects are located in and around Cape Town and also in St. Lucia on the East Coast. Cape Town is called "The Mother City" by the locals and is the second largest in the country. St. Lucia has been called Africa's "premier bush and beach destination". Placements are available in teaching, coaching and wildlife preservation.

  • AmeriSpan Study Abroad's Mission Statement

Our mantra is "Every Language, Every Culture, Everywhere." AmeriSpan Study Abroad has over 15 years experience and over 30,000 past participants. Our staff has three passions: language, culture, and travel. Individually and as a group, we have accumulated experiences and knowledge related to these passions. AmeriSpan's staff has traveled to more than 65 countries, every continent except Antarctica, speak 10 languages, and we are happy to share this enormous amount of relevant knowledge with you. Every staff member has studied and/or lived abroad for extended periods of time. We are neither a language school nor a travel agent, we're a hybrid of the two: a language travel organization. AmeriSpan has evaluated hundreds of schools, host families and destinations to determine which programs to offer, and our independence allows us to give you unbiased evaluations of these programs. Our pledge to our participants is to make going abroad 'worry-free'. There is no risk in choosing an AmeriSpan program because you'll get the best program, best price and can cancel for any reason and get a full refund on every dollar we have received for your program.
