AmeriSpan - Study Spanish in Santo Domingo

Dominican Republic
Share |

Location
Dominican Republic: Santo Domingo

Term
Throughout the year

Dates
New classes begin each month

  • Description

The Merengue, a national dance, sets the tone in Santo Domingo, the capital. The population of 2.5 million bustles in a city full of museums, shopping, broad boulevards and ultra modern buildings. Nestled amongst the new office buildings is Old Santo Domingo, full of colonial charm and ruins.

Our small partner school is located in a residential neighborhood and is part of the director's home. Classes are taught on a covered breezy patio surrounded by fruit trees and flowers. Capacity is limited; so, plan ahead.

  • Highlights

Known for its old Spanish ruins, beaches and baseball players, the Dominican Republic is located about 600 miles southeast of Florida and occupies two-thirds of Hispaniola, an island discovered by Columbus when he ran the Santa Maria aground on Christmas Day, 1492. The island's strategic position between the Panama canal and Central and South America has made it a natural gateway to the Americas. Here one can hike on the area's highest mountain, Pico Duarte - 10,414 feet high, travel through lush jungle and semi-arid deserts or enjoy the sea from white sand beaches. Today, the country is still largely untouched and undiscovered despite a booming tourist industry attracted by the natural beauty, upscale casinos and low cost of living.
