Monteverde is a small community located in the Tilaran mountain range. The community was founded by North American Quakers in the 1950's. Primarily a community of dairy farmers, the Quakers began conservation efforts of the cloud forest to protect the watershed. Today, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve covers 10,500 hectares and receives thousands of visitors each year, making eco-tourism a big industry in this area. Despite the number of tourists, Monteverde and the adjoining town of Santa Elena (only 3 kilometers away) still maintain a small town community and a life that goes on outside the busy tourism industry. This program is ideal for nature lovers.

Known as the Switzerland of Central America, Costa Rica has an abundance of natural beauty and is populated by a friendly, well-educated people. Costa Rica has obtained the highest standard of living in Central America by embracing democracy and disbanding its army. This small country is a paradise for nature lovers with many national parks, jungles, volcanoes, beaches and more rivers and water per square mile than any other country in the world, excluding New Zealand. However, the small pre-Colombian Indigenous population was wiped out by diseases brought to the new world by the conquistadors.
