American summer camps offer children of six to sixteen a largely outdoor experience of sports, arts and crafts for anything from two to eight weeks during the long summer holiday. They are usually in the countryside many miles from town and are often sited in areas of outstanding natural beauty. Most have a lakeside setting, allowing children to swim, sail and water-ski. Land-based activities include archery, field sports, science, crafts and the performing arts. The majority of camps are permanent structures featuring sleeping cabins, offices, medical and activity centers, a dining hall and an amphitheater where the whole camp can meet. Two forms of summer camp also cater for adults. These are family/resort camps, which offer a full program of the day and evening activities to both children and adults, and special needs camps where the ages of participants can vary greatly. There are more than 12,000 summer camps in the USA looking after seven million American children every year. Though mainly in the north east, you might find yourself at a camp in, for example, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, Florida or California or any other state. Every camp has its own individual philosophy, but they all share the common aim of broadening their campers' outlook by encouraging them to share new experiences. As a representative of a different culture, you will be a fundamental part of the children's learning process. Often suitability for a specific camp type (rather than skills) is the basis for your placement. If there are any types about which you are unsure, please consult your interviewer. Our aim is always to place you in an environment where you will be happy and be able to contribute while having fun.
Camp America offers four choices of placement:
Camp Counselors are either activity instructors or look after the general day-to-day care of a group of children. The Camp power program offers placements in support areas of camps, such as kitchen and maintenance. Special Needs Counselors work with children and adults with either physical or mental disabilities. A newer program 'Resort America' sends students to work in Resorts located throughout America....Have a browse and select the program that best suits you.
