  • Description

American Collegiate English (ACE) at Grossmont College is a non-credit, pre-collegiate program which provides English instruction to non-native speakers of English who would like to improve their English skills to be able to attend an American college.

Started in 1992, the ACE Program has prepared hundreds of students for entry into Grossmont College, a two-year public institution. Grossmont students may earn associate degrees and certificates in many different fields of study or transfer to a university after studying at Grossmont for two years. Grossmont has transfer agreements with the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU), both of which are a short drive from Grossmont College.

Five ACE eight-week sessions are offered every year. Each session consists of twenty hours per week of intermediate-level English instruction in grammar, composition, speaking and listening, reading, vocabulary, and TOEFL iBT. ACE instructors are university trained professionals who have a master's degree in TESOL or applied linguistics. ACE class sizes are small, averaging 15 students, which allows for more individualized instruction. ACE provides access to the Grossmont College Learning Recources and Technology Center, which includes the library, TOEFL practice, and Internet and email access. In addition, ACE students have access to all Grossmont College student services and receive a student ID and benefit card.

ACE provides a smooth transition to Grossmont College. After students complete an ACE session and achieve a TOEFL iBT score of 45 (or Grossmont College Institutional pBT of 450), they may immediately transfer to Grossmont College. ACE students enrolled in our Level II courses may also qualify for ACE conditional acceptance to Grossmont College. Students who fulfill the following conditional acceptance standards during an eight-week session of ACE are eligible to enter Grossmont College without a TOEFL score because they have demonstrated that they have the English proficiency and study skills necessary to succeed in college:

To meet the ACE conditional enrollment standards and be eligible to enter Grossmont College, an ACE student must have:
    1. earned a combined GPA of 3.0,
    2. nine hours of absences or fewer,
    3. exhibited behavior with no violation of the Grossmont College Code of Conduct, and
    4. taken the Grossmont College ESL Assessment Test and placed into ESL 103 or higher.
