  • Description

Volunteer in a kinder/day care for the children of poor families working in the pineapple fields and packing plants. A healthy and nutritious meal or snack is served every weekday. The center also provides supportive childcare for grandmas who are struggling to care for young children.

Our international volunteers work at the kinder providing programs for young children in the morning and enrichment activities for the older kids when they get out of school later in the day. The idea to build a kinder began when a retired American couple opened their home in El Porvenir to about 20 local children to teach them basic skills. Because many children had never attended school, some of these "kindergarten" students are in their teens.

Founders, Amalia and Charlie initiated the construction of the new kinder and day care to be able to provide these kids with a daily nutritious meal, educational enrichment and a safe place to play and "hang out."

  • Highlights

Honduras is a nation full of contradictions. Stunning beauty against the backdrop of the 2nd poorest country in the western hemisphere. It is a country that produces seemingly endless amounts of corn and fruit yet over 75% of the population lives in poverty and struggles for food on a daily basis. Set against the stunning, lush and rugged mountains of the north coast, Honduras - dense jungle meets the pristine waters of the Caribbean Sea near the coastal city of La Ceiba. To the west the lush jungle turns dry, almost desert-like near the beautiful Colonial town of Comayagua. Santa when the city fills with people from all over the country and decorates the streets with hundreds of amazing colourful saw-dust carpets. It is a cultural experience you don't want to miss! Hike through 1000 year old Maya Ruins just outside the quant town of Copan. If you haven't had enough yet then head back to the north coast and catch a ferry over the the Bay Islands for a little fun in the sun and relaxing on the white sand beaches as the crystal clear water of the Caribbean laps up against you. Be sure not to miss out on diving the 2nd largest coral reef on the planet with one of the cheapest and most experienced dive shops in the world. So grab a baleada and relax, because nobody else is in a rush, c'mon, you're on Honduran time now!
