  • Description

Teach kindergarten through grade 6 in a school situated on a lush mountainside in the jungle in La Herradura, Honduras. This school currently has 65 students in grades 1-6 and 18 students in kindergarten. It is located in a steep jungle area near the lower Cangrejal River Watershed, called Herradura near the Caribbean coastal city of La Ceiba.

Some of the children attending this school walk two hours each way on slippery trails in extreme heat every day just to have the opportunity to get an education. Most of these children live in remote, isolated areas and face extreme poverty. The families rely mostly on their crops and when the crops do poorly, most struggle to find food. Jungle School provides a lunch each day for the students and for some it is their only meal of the day.

Our international volunteers will assist in a number of areas from assisting with the kindergarten class to teaching grades 1-6. All volunteers will assist the children with general cleaning duties around the school. Most volunteers also help the local mothers with the preparation and distribution of lunch to all the children. After school concludes, volunteers are encouraged to use this time to work with the students on their English skills or perhaps on activities and skills they themselves bring. ie Karate, Yoga, Baseball etc.

  • Highlights

Honduras is a nation full of contradictions. Stunning beauty against the backdrop of the 2nd poorest country in the western hemisphere. It is a country that produces seemingly endless amounts of corn and fruit yet over 75% of the population lives in poverty and struggles for food on a daily basis. Set against the stunning, lush and rugged mountains of the north coast, Honduras dense jungle meets the pristine waters of the Caribbean Sea near the coastal city of La Ceiba. To the west the lush jungle turns dry, almost desert-like near the beautiful Colonial town of Comayagua. Santa when the city fills with people from all over the country and decorates the streets with hundreds of amazing colourful saw-dust carpets. It is a cultural experience you dont want to miss! Hike through 1000 year old Maya Ruins just outside the quant town of Copan. If you havent had enough yet then head back to the north coast and catch a ferry over the the Bay Islands for a little fun in the sun and relaxing on the white sand beaches as the crystal clear water of the Caribbean laps up against you. Be sure not to miss out on diving the 2nd largest coral reef on the planet with one of the cheapest and most experienced dive shops in the world. So grab a baleada and relax, because nobody else is in a rush, c'mon, you're on Honduran time now!
