Support Local Women Artisans in Costa Rica

Costa Rica
Share |

Location
Costa Rica: Monteverde

Program Duration
2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks

Typical Duration of Program
2-4 weeks

  • Description

Volunteers will work in a local nonprofit crafts cooperative dedicated to enhancing the economic and social well-being of women artists. This is a grass-roots organization created by local women artists that has now grown significantly! They have a local store and conduct workshops to showcase their products, which include wall hangings, ceramics, clothes, bags, jewelry, toys and unusual wood carvings. All of their work is inspired by the natural beauty of the region in which they live. The cooperative also works to educate women on business operations in order to help generate extra family income and, more importantly, build self-esteem and encourage community participation. Volunteers should be sensitive to cultural differences and women's development and be willing to reach out, build relationships and foster growth. Please note that the minimum time commitment for this project is 3 weeks.

  • Highlights

Program participants will have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Tico culture and pura vida, the relaxing way of life that has made Costa Rica famous. While volunteering in Costa Rica, you can explore the astonishing biodiversity for which this Central American country is known. Whether your interest is hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, surfing, zip-lining, exploring the cloud forest and waterfalls, or just relaxing on the beach, you will be able to combine some or all of these with your volunteer program.
