Liquidnet Family High School is an integral part of the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village, an innovative residential community dedicated to serving Rwanda's most vulnerable youth. The high school contributes to the Village's vision by providing quality education and adequately preparing students for their future roles in society. Liquidnet Family High School is an upper secondary institution, offering three years of high school, with an initial catch up year during which students learn English, enhance their cognitive abilities and supplement their mastery of the middle school curriculum.
The volunteer ELL Consultant will have the unique opportunity to teach English, develop curriculum, and support staff at ASYV/LNFHS. Due to government mandated English language instruction, every high school student must take the majority of their classes in English. For students coming from varying backgrounds, including many who received their prior education exclusively in Kinyarwanda and French, learning English is the key to their success in other subjects.
The ELL Consultant will draw upon their considerable English teaching experience, and work with the existing English teachers, to advise all Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village/Liquidnet Family High School teachers on involving ELL methods in their teaching. He or she will also use his or her past teaching experience to bring new perspectives and methods to contribute to improving the quality of education at LNFHS. The ELL Consultant will be asked to help with pedagogy including writing lesson plans, editing exams, compiling course books, and providing teacher enrichment.
The ELL Consultant will also collaborate with other volunteers and staff to contribute to English language learning efforts in the Village that complement the courses at school. The ELL Consultant will train and organize informal education staff to run intensive English courses before the school year begins. The ELL consultant will also train volunteers and other staff to teach English to Village staff members who are interested, including counselors, house mothers, maintenance workers, kitchen staff and farm workers.
Volunteers spend one year living and working in the Village in collaboration with permanent Village staff. Volunteer fellowship covers the cost of the flight to Rwanda, health insurance, emergency evacuation insurance, room and board, and a small monthly stipend. Volunteers are expected to integrate into the community and build close relationships with both students and staff. Most volunteers will be assigned to a family of 15 incoming young men or women to mentor throughout the year. Volunteers will be asked to spend at least 10 hours on behalf of the village at public engagements and other speaking events upon their departure from the Village.
Functions and Responsibilities:
The ELL Consultant will:
* Mentor teachers at LNFHS on English Language Learning, and work with English teachers to integrate ELL best practices into all courses
* Mentor teachers on pedagogical tools and methods
* Provide ongoing support to the LNFHS, bringing a new perspective to efforts for growth and development
* Coordinate intensive English training, train other volunteers and staff to hold classes for new class of students before the school year begins

* Train volunteers to teach English to staff during the day
* Maintain a culture of English learning in the Village, such that students can continually improve for their educational benefit
