HOW?
Work as a volunteer in a local non-governmental (NGO)/non-profit organization in Nairobi, Kenya, and actively engage in the issues affecting Kenyans in their everyday lives. You will have the opportunity to go beyond what you have learned in the classroom, and put your knowledge into practice. By offering your skills, knowledge and commitment, you can help NGOs to build their organizational capacity, achieve their objectives, and ultimately promote sustainable development.
As a volunteer, you will also gain invaluable international work experience, and will be able to explore different interest areas, learn new skills and gain diverse experiences to build up your resume. Through working with local communities and organizations, you will have the opportunity to engage in cross-cultural exchange, to be exposed to a completely different way of life, and to build life-long friendships.
Volunteers will be placed in a non-profit community-based organization that works in the Kitui Ndogo and Dagoretti slums. The Kitui Ndogo slum is located in Nairobi and has roughly 300,000 people, half of which live on less than USD1 per day. Around 70% of the inhabitants are under the age of 15 and roughly 15% have HIV/AIDs. On the fringes of the Kibera slum is the Dagoretti slum which often receives the overflow migrants from Kibera. Dagoretti lacks infrastructure, waste management or sanitation systems and electricity.
Chronic food insecurity is one of the major problems in both slums, and most children living there do not even get one meal a day. This is exacerbated by the high HIV/AIDS infection rates which create high numbers of street children who have been orphaned by AIDS. Without a family, children have no opportunity to access assistance or attend school.
Trip participants will volunteer their time working at two of the organizations orphanages in the Kitui Ndogo and Dagoretti slums, educating them and spending time with them. USD50 of the program fee will be allocated for a food donation to the orphanages. For a limited time only, we are waiving the deposit.
