  • Description

    Work in a Marine Turtle Institute in Uruguay! For animal science majors or anyone interested in ecology and marine life in South America. Duties include:

    * Capturing and tagging young green turtles in coastal areas
    * Documentation of turtle activity during nesting and hatching
    * Analysis of dead or killed turtles for results and attempts at prevention
    * Helping with guided tours at the Turtle Center / Sanctuary
    * Assistance with rehabilitating injured, sick or lost turtles

    Live with the Turtles in a designated "National System of Protected Area" in Uruguay, close to the border of Brazil. This area for this study is a rocky formation atop the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by smaller sandy beaches. Candidates will live on site, three meals per day are provided plus all transportation with the protected park area to the various turtle centers.

  • Highlights

    * The amount of time you choose to intern is flexible, with program lengths ranging from 2 to 12 months.
    * This can be a non-academic or academic internship - you decide.  All candidates who have sought to receive credit for this program have done so.  
    * Extensive Pre-Departure Orientation and counseling
    * You will be met at the airport when you arrive in Montevideo, and taken directly to your housing
    * 3 weeks, 4 hours per day, of intensive Spanish language classes are included in the fee
    * 2 - 3 excursions are included during your intensive Spanish coursework.
    * This program is designed to be 50% work experience and 50% cultural / language acquisition and immersion.  
    * Housing is included.
    * Internship positions are for 4 hours each day, 5 days a week. You will gain real, international work experience to add to your resume.
    * The Adelante Director in Montevideo is English-speaking and is available to you for support and assistance should you need it.

  • Qualifications

    Program candidates should be 18 or older and possess a desire to learn about and live in another culture. Some Spanish knowledge is required. For this position studies in animal science or ecology or a strong interest in this sector are required. Candidates should be at college or graduate level, though do we have some "gap-year" candidates.

    Qualities required are: dependability for your work assignment, courage for your international living abroad experience and openness to all the new people and experiences you will encounter.
