My first two weeks in Spain have been nothing short of amazing. The Sevillanos are as welcoming and warm as the weather, which is sunny and mild even in January and February, and Sevilla is full of things to do and see. I’ve met so many people and made so many friends that I’m settling in very quickly and having the most fun I’ve had in a long time. My homestay has been one of the best parts of my trip so far. My señora is so friendly and talkative that it feels like living at Grandma’s house! Her cooking also deserves high praise, especially the Spanish tor...

Don’t try to tell us otherwise because we won’t believe you, Paris is one of the most amazing cities out there. What do they do right? Well just about everything in our books (with perhaps one exception of Napoleon, but we’ll let Versailles speak for itself). With a condensed amount of both time and money, we made sure to cram everything in that this fascinating city renders. Ok, so let’s begin with the cuisine. The atmospheres’ alone could consume this entire post, granted the architecture enveloped throughout the entire city is breathtaking; t...

Pablo.Picasso. This week we wandered the streets of the Gothic quarter and made our way to the Museo Picasso de Barcelona. After seeing Picasso’s childhood home and walking the exact streets that inspired so many of his creations, we were given a deeper insight into the masterminds’ artistic vision. Inside, the museum provided a timeline of Picasso’s work, dating back to his rudimentary sketchbook and pencil drawings. Even though Picasso’s most famous works are not inside this museum, we felt a connection to the surrealism and the original works that made him one of the most influe...

"¡Definitivamente tienes que ir a San Pedro—valdrá la pena!" After stepping on el TurBus at 11:30 p.m. equipped with a day’s worth of PB&J, apples, crackers, carrots, chocolate, and a fully charged iPod in preparation for our 23-hour road trip up north and probably the longest ride of my life, I was certainly hoping the Chileans were right when they insisted that I couldn’t leave the country without visiting San Pedro de Atacama. A week later, I can attest to the fact that although I at times have the slightest clue as to what the natives are trying to tell me, the...

This blog entry is more about Bryn than me. This Saturday she ran the We Run Montevideo 2011 and placed 68th in her age division and 245th out of all women. There were over 10,000 runners that day! I went to with Bryn to the warm up to snap some pics of the race and the thousands of runners in their red shirts, and then, because it was such a cold cloudy day, I nestled into a window seat in a bookstore called Yenny to draw the spectators lined up along the Rambla and to wait for Bryn to circle back. I was surprised to find her already at our meeting point, a medal hung around her neck, after a little ...

Took a trip to the zoo with Bryn before she had to go to work at Karumbe. It's a pretty sad institution. Perhaps the worst though is the one loan lion sitting in a nearly empty pool - only about a foot of trash filled dirty water - with the one loan penguin hanging out at the top of this nearly empty pool. There's trash everywhere on the grounds and in the pools and cages. Signs are falling apart or are non-existent in places. However, Bryn snapped this cool pic of a peacock hanging out by the elephants.

Last weekend was epic, but it took me all week to recover. Dancing on the beach in Coronilla, turtle dissections, cooking with new amigos, walking for miles (and miles and miles) and getting lost, hitch hiking, some extra bus rides, walking more miles, almost having a breakdown, finally getting to Cabo Polonia, more cooking, walking to the lighthouse at night, finding a baby sea lion, sand dune photo shoot (totes ANTM), finally making it home and, for the grand finale, inviting our new friends over to have breakfast for dinner until 2 in the morning.

¡Buenaaaas! Life’s good. That catchy slogan that’s made its way onto t-shirts and mugs has also made its way into my daily mindset here in Chile. Waking up in Viña del Mar, literally translating to ocean vineyard, and working in Valparaíso, whose name derived years back from passengers informing drivers that they wanted to go to paradise, “va al paraíso,” I’ve realized that starting my day by the ocean and spending most of it in so-called paradise leaves next to nothing to complain about. However,...

Today I went thrifting at a little place called Recicla that's right by the University on Guayaba (esq. Eduardo Acevedo). One shirt for work, one shirt for hanging out, and one sweet spring jacket all for 600 pesos (USD 30). From what I've seen so far in this city, if you want quality/style, it seems like you have to cough up a significant amount of cash since everything is imported. But this place, on the other hand, has great stuff AND you don't have to break the bank!
