  • Highlights

Capital of the Algarve since 1756, Faro has been reborn several times over the centuries'following invasion, fire, and earthquake. A prehistoric fishing village, it became an important port and administrative center under the Romans, who named it Ossonoba. Captured from the Moors in 1249 by Alfonso III, Faro prospered until 1596, when it was sacked and burned by British forces. A new city rose from the ashes, only to be badly damaged in the earthquake of 1755. The city currently has all the facilities of a modern European city, with an attractive shopping area, good restaurants, and a 'real' Portuguese feel in contrast to many nearby resorts.

Today Faro, and the region around it have become one of the more popular regions of Portugal. There are small fishing villages and secluded beaches, particularly in the west, that so far have escaped attention; an abundance of extraordinary rock formations and idyllic grottoes, also in the west; and to the east, a series of isolated sandbar islands and sun drenched beaches.
