  • Description

    * Child Care Assistance
    We offer social programs working in a local orphanage or day care center in Dar Es Salaam. These facilities provide shelter, food, love and education to orphans, abandoned and street children of surrounding city community. The children range in age from infants to 13yrs old. As a volunteer, you will primarily assist with the daily care of the kids; including preparing meals, bathing and teaching basic English, playing games, holding babies. You can play sports, arrange activities, create arts & crafts projects and share your time and caring with these wonderful children. Prior experience not necessary, volunteers should have a lot of patience, an open mind and a sense of adventure. We do recommend you learn a few words and phrases of Swahili, which will be very helpful with the children.

    * Woman's Support Programs
    Volunteer at a community center focused on supporting woman, and the elderly. This project aims to take these young woman off the streets by training them to be self-reliant or self-employed through advocacy, awareness, training, support and counseling. The project addresses social and physical issues affecting youth, such as gender, reproductive health, and drug abuse through counseling and education. Volunteers help initiate talks about the existence of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Help to support the vocational training in tailoring, embroidery, bead work, making batiks & tie-die allowing girls to start income generating activities for themselves. Volunteers with counseling experience, therapists, teachers, or those with clothes/art design are more than welcome. Prior experience is not required.

    Programs are located in the city limits and the suburbs, volunteers will need to take public transportation each day, approximately 3 USD - 4 USD per day and should budget correctly

  • Highlights

    Volunteer Abroad in Dar Es Salaam Tanzania: is a bustling seaport city in Tanzania, situated on a massive natural harbor on the Eastern India Ocean coast of Africa. It is a city that is rich in diversity; due to the increasing importance of tourism and in part to the growth of the expatriate communities.

    The city itself is an eclectic mix of Swahili, German, Asian and British architecture, reflecting its colonial past and more recent history. Remnants of colonial presence, both German and British, can still be seen in the landmarks and architecture around the city. The National Museum, the Village Museum, and many colorful markets are well worth a visit. Numerous s historical landmarks, including St. Joseph's Cathedral, the White Father's Mission House, the Botanical Gardens, and the old State House are a must for any visitor of the city.

    With its great atmosphere, mix of African, Muslim, and South Asian influences, picturesque harbor, beaches, chaotic markets, and historical buildings, it is an interesting place in Africa to volunteer. This city is also the gateway to the island of Zanzibar, a highlight for most visitors to Tanzania.

    Dar es Salaam's weather is humid and hot during the dry season from September to March, and humid and cooler following the long rainy season from June to August. Dar has two rainy seasons, the short rains from late-October to early-December and the long rains from March to June. The nice time to travel is July-September.

    With our volunteer programs we allow you to discover the wonders of East Africa, while doing meaningful and rewarding community work. This is a great opportunity to explore life in rural Tanzania, live and work amongst the locals and realize one person can make a difference.

  • Qualifications

    - Proactive: Jump in and maintain a positive attitude.
    - Patient: Life in your host country moves slower than one might be used to. Relax and enjoy the slow pace. Remember, not everything is as organized and predictable as life in the US or UK.
    - Flexible: Plans change, roads get flooded, and electricity goes out. Realize that not everything goes as planned, but good intention is always there.
    - Considerate: Respect those around you and be a reliable worker at the program site. Tell your host family if you will be late. Advise the Project Coordinator if you are sick and can not work.
    - Respectful: Remember that the local people you are working with, side by side, do so with little or no salary. They do this work because they believe in it. There are times when you may not agree with or understand the organizations decisions or direction. Although your suggestions are always welcome, your faith, respect and consideration for their long term work and commitment is appreciated.
    - Friendly: In order to truly help someone you must get to know them. Do not be afraid to make friends with the local people. Smile, wave and see how fast you are welcomed into the community.
    - Tolerant: The food, the culture, the smells and the sounds will be unfamiliar to you at first. We recommend that you dive in and experience life head-on. You will be surprised at how quickly you will adapt.
