  • Description

The Care Center has a nursery school for their children, as well as serves the local children of the community. Educational classes are provided daily to about 40 children ranging from 3yrs-6yrs old. The children are curious, friendly and will welcome you with open arms.

The teachers and staff focus on working with each child to develop confidence, independence and a desire to learn. Children 'learn through doing' and work in an environment of mutual respect and co-operation which aims for the development of the whole child. Teaching assistance are needed since there is a shortage of paid staff. More and more children have been arriving each year since the school opened in 2006. Volunteer tasks include teaching English, reading story books, creating fun educational games, accompanying the children during possible field trips and helping the local staff in any means possible. Teaching experience is not necessary, but a pro-active spirit is required.

  • Highlights

Volunteering Abroad near Belize City, Belize: Belize City is the largest city in Belize. It has a Caribbean feel and is a common port stop for cruise ships. Our project is located in a village in the Belize District which is less than 8 miles from Belize City. The project is near to the Belize International Airport (BZE) which makes for easy arrival and departures.

The village is a close knit community where the locals are generous and easy going. The area around the project is residential housing and many of the local village children attend the nursery school at the orphanage. Within close proximity are small shops and eateries and local transport (bus or taxi) to downtown Belize City. One way local bus to Belize City is less than USD 2.

The wonderful climate and the hospitable people make Belize a wonderful place to live and volunteer. Our programs provide you the chance to discover the wonders of the Caribbean and Central America, while doing meaningful and rewarding community service work. This is a great opportunity to explore life in a coastal Caribbean town, live and work amongst the locals and realize one person can make a difference.

  • Qualifications

    - Proactive: Jump in and maintain a positive attitude.
    - Patient: Life in your host country moves slower than one might be used to. Relax and enjoy the slow pace. Remember, not everything is as organized and predictable as life in the US or UK.
    - Flexible: Plans change, roads get flooded, and electricity goes out. Realize that not everything goes as planned, but good intention is always there.
    - Considerate: Respect those around you and be a reliable worker at the program site. Tell your host family if you will be late. Advise the Project Coordinator if you are sick and can not work.
    - Respectful: Remember that the local people you are working with, side by side, do so with little or no salary. They do this work because they believe in it. There are times when you may not agree with or understand the organizations decisions or direction. Although your suggestions are always welcome, your faith, respect and consideration for their long term work and commitment is appreciated.
    - Friendly: In order to truly help someone you must get to know them. Do not be afraid to make friends with the local people. Smile, wave and see how fast you are welcomed into the community.
    - Tolerant: The food, the culture, the smells and the sounds will be unfamiliar to you at first. We recommend that you dive in and experience life head-on. You will be surprised at how quickly you will adapt.
