Study in London (Middlesex University)

Thousands of international students study in London every year because the quality of education is high and the location is incredible. You can do the same by joining World Endeavors for an unforgettable semester or full academic year abroad. Earn credit from one of the largest universities in the UK in one of the most exciting cities on the planet- London!

Eligibility: Applicants must have a GPA of 2.8 (4.0 scale) or equivalent to be eligible for the program.

Pre-Departure Information: Before students embark, they will be provided a pre-departure guide that includes important details about their semester abroad. In addition, students may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions.

Back_topOrientation:

From the moment of arrival, staff are on hand to welcome and support international students. An airport reception is offered at London Heathrow to transfer students to their halls of residence on campus. Students then attend an orientation program, which is an excellent opportunity to get to know the university and the British way of life, as well as a chance to meet fellow students in a relaxed atmosphere before studies begin.

The orientation covers everything from culture shock and using the tube to the differences in UK and US study methods and program planning. The schedule also includes, free of charge, a guided tour of central London and a special night out on the town.

After arrival, a team of specially designated staff is on hand to support North American and other international students on each campus throughout the semester. The team has office hours and can help with both academic and non-academic questions. They can also be contacted at home in case of emergency.

Back_topHousing:

Single study bedroom accommodations provided.

The university has conveniently located halls of residence near transportation routes on most campuses. These are single study bedrooms with internet connection points (free and unlimited internet access) and shared bathrooms and kitchens. All residences have public phones and most also have access to laundry facilities and TV lounges. Residence Assistants work on each campus as a first point of contact.

Back_topAcademics:

Each student will take three courses for a semester. Academic credit and transcripts will be issued by Middlesex University after the successful completion of course requirements for the semester program.

Instruction
You are expected to take a lot of responsibility for organizing your own time and work. Study methods encourage research, and students are expected to communicate their own views and opinions on the subjects they are studying.

Different programs are taught in different ways, but teaching is often done through independent and small group study, alongside the more traditional lecture. In these respects, higher education in Britain may be different to the secondary or higher education you have experienced in your home country.

Credit and Credit Transfer
Courses (called modules) are credit rated and fully transferable and are taught in two semesters. The academic calendar is fully aligned with the North American academic calendar.

Converting credit for modules is usually not a problem at all. One module would typically offer 20 unit credits at Middlesex University. Typically, North American institutions would convert the sum of all credits earned (3 modules=60 credits) in a particular semester to 12 academic credits.

Academic credit and transcripts will be issued by Middlesex University after the successful completion of course requirements for the semester or academic year program. It is the student's responsibility to contact their academic advisor prior to the semester to ensure that courses taken while abroad are transferable to their home institution.

Students can choose courses from a wide range of disciplines.

  • Creative and Media Writing
  • Criminology
  • Dance
  • Development
  • Drama and Theatre
  • English Language
  • English Language and Teaching
  • English Literary Studies
  • Modern Languages (French, German, Italian and Spanish)
  • Philosophy
  • Sociology
  • Translation
  • Politics
  • Business

Students can choose from a pre-selected course catalog.  Please download the PDF on the right hand side of this page for a full course listing.  For course descriptions, please contact World Endeavors.

Full academic year students have a wider variety of courses to choose from (more than 4,000).  Preliminary selection of courses occurs during the application process. Course selection will be finalized after arrival on campus.

Back_topParticipant Life:

You will receive a free Students' Union card which serves as a passport to countless discounts to cultural and sporting events, entertainment, dining and other services. London's attractions are easily accessible to students and you can enjoy life here without having to spend a lot of money.

All students are based at one of the seven major campuses, depending on their study program. The campuses range in style form modern centers to period buildings.

While its size and diversity make the university one of the largest higher education institutions in the country, each of the campuses is small enough to be friendly and welcoming.

Each campus is a center of academic expertise with its own Learning Resource Center including modern libraries, IT equipment, language centers and media facilities, all providing a conducive environment for effective study.

Each campus also provides many ways to relax and enjoy the lighter side of university life. A packed social calendar at every site, organized by the Students Union, offers many opportunities for students to mix.

There are first-rate sports and leisure facilities on every campus with activities ranging from frisbee to football and table-tennis to Tae Kwon Do. All are taught at varying levels of ability in modern venues, including sports halls, indoor tennis courts, swimming pools, fitness rooms, local sports clubs and playing fields.

Activities: Students can participate in a wide variety of clubs and societies, sports teams, and entertainment events coordinated by the Student's Union.

Getting around
You will find an A-Z of London street map useful, available from most bookshops or newsagents. Driving in London is difficult, with frequent traffic jams and few parking spaces. The best way to get around is by public transport. Rail services and underground services are fast and frequent and the maps and travel directions are clear. Buses are good for short journeys.

Details of rail services are available from rail travel centres at Euston, King 's Cross, St. Pancras, Liverpool Street, Waterloo and Victoria stations. Underground and bus route maps are available from London Transport (LT) information centres at Euston, Heathrow, Kings Cross, Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, St James 's Park and Victoria underground stations.

UK students qualify for one-third off the price of rail travel with a young person 's railcard, 18 a year, available from main rail stations. Take two passport-size photographs and a current Students' Union membership card with you. The British Travel Centre, 12 Regent Street, London W1 has information about the rest of Britain.

Seeing the sights
London Transport (LT) publishes a visitor's guide to London which can also be obtained from LT information centres. From 9.30am, the one-day Travelcard gives unlimited bus, underground and rail travel. The London Tourist Board has leaflets and maps detailing hundreds of things to see and do in London. They have information centres at Victoria Station, Harrods and Selfridges stores, the Tower of London (summer only) and the underground station concourse at Heathrow airport.

If London is new to you, a good way to see the main tourist attractions is to take one of the many tours offered by different companies. Choose a tour accompanied by a Blue Badge guide, as this indicates the guide has received training by the London Tourist Board. London Transport operates full-day and half-day tours (telephone 020 7222 1234).

Theatre, concerts and exhibitions
London has been called the cultural capital of the world and supports an impressive variety of artistic activities. Most national newspapers have good listings guides detailing events and activities, as does the Evening Standard. Weekly magazines like Time Out are also good sources of information.

The Society of West End Theatres (SWET) operates a half-price ticket booth at Leicester Square which sells tickets for same-day performances at reduced rates. It opens at midday for matinees and 2.30pm for evening performances.

You can eat out in style in London almost any style you please. Prices vary enormously. By law, all restaurants must display a menu outside the door giving prices and whether service charges are included. Where service is not included, it is customary to leave a tip of 10 to 15% of the bill.
