Study in China

Study in China for an unforgettable semester in one of the world's most exciting locations. Yantai is a city lying on the eastern tip of Shandong Peninsula, on the Yellow Sea facing South Korea and Japan across the sea. This coastal city is a short flight from the capital of Beijing and from the bustling metropolis of Shanghai. Yantai University has twenty colleges and departments with forty-five undergraduate specialties, eighteen graduate programs and one professional degree program. Over 25,000 students come to Yantai University from over 27 provinces and regions around China for its excellent teachers and facilities. The university library is over 40,000 square meters with 1.2 million volumes and digital archives.

As one of the first universities to open to foreign students, Yantai welcomes students from the United States, Canada, the UK, and Australia to name a few. There are around 200 foreign students participating in Yantai University's Chinese language and culture studies at any one time. World Endeavors students will experience a semester of liberal arts and language classes centered around Chinese history and culture.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have completed secondary school, be currently enrolled in a university program, or already hold a university degree (or equivalent)
  • GPA of 2.75

Pre-Departure Information: Before students embark on their trip, they will be provided a pre-departure guide that includes important details about their semester abroad. In addition, students may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions.

After arriving in China, students will be provided an orientation that will acquaint them with student life, the campus, and the surrounding area.

Back_topHousing:

A fully furnished double room in International House includes air conditioning, bathroom, telephone, computer room with Internet access, laundry room, kitchen and dining area,  common room, study room, day and night security guards, room cleaning services twice a week, and bicycle rental. Housing is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Other housing options are also available.

Back_topAcademics:

The language courses are conducted in English and Mandarin. Experience with the Chinese language is not required. Courses in specific majors are conducted in Mandarin.  Each student will take up to five courses for 3 credits each. Academic credit and transcripts will be issued by Jacksonville University, a fully-accredited Florida university.

Instruction
Proficiency in Mandarin is not required; however, the program is designed to be an immersive language experience. Students who can demonstrate an intermediate proficiency in the language have the option to undertake Chinese history and culture courses.  Advanced speakers can take regular Yantai University courses in a wide variety of subjects.

Credit and Transcripts
Each student will take up to five courses of three credits each. Academic credit and transcripts will be issued by Jacksonville University after the successful completion of course requirements for the semester program. It is the student's responsibility to contact their academic advisor prior to the semester to ensure that courses taken while abroad are transferable to their home institution.

Students will have every opportunity to experience the authentic Chinese life.  While there are a fair number of international students at Yantai, by far the vast majority of the students are Chinese: 25,000 domestic students study at Yantai.  If your aim is to learn about the Chinese language and culture, you could not do so in a better setting!  Chinese students are friendly and eager to practice their English skills, and participants could very easily set up a language exchange that would provide a wonderful way to learn Chinese as well as make new friends. 

The city of Yantai boasts an international airport with non-stop flights to Hong Kong, Osaka, Beijing, Shanghai and Seoul, as well as other destinations within China and neighboring countries.  The rail and bus system is modern and convenient with affordable fares to cities all over China.  Downtown Yantai is only 10 minutes by bus from the University center, and the shores of the Yellow Sea are only a five minutes' walk from class.  Yantai is one of the safest cities in China and students will be able to enjoy all the amenities of modern Chinese life.

Activities: Students will have full access to the university's fitness centers, libraries, student center and all other available facilities.  The program provides free assistance with opening a Chinese bank account, as well as a complimentary trip-planning service, for students who are interested in travel within China.  Students may visit numerous scenic locations near Yantai, including Penglai Pavilion, a majestic city built on a cliff by the sea.  Other scenic spots include Zhifu Island, Yunding Natural Landscape, and the county of Changdao.  Beijing and Shanghai are both only 45 minutes by plane from Yantai.
