Study and Service Learning Programs in Tibet Amid the Unrest
Tibet charms travelers with the unique and deeply spiritual way of life of its people and its geographic location, with most of the Himalayan mountain range lying within it.
This remote southwestern Chinese region received 4 million tourists from both home and abroad in 2007. According to the Embassy of the Republic of China in the US, Tibet's tourism revenue accounts for more than 14 percent of the region's gross domestic product.
Following the recent widespread unrest in Tibet, travel permit to this region has been restricted for domestic and foreign visitors. Most international study and service learning programs were cancelled. "Until restrictions are lifted, allowing travelers to obtain Tibetan travel permits, we cannot send individuals into Tibet and will not compromise the safety of our volunteers," says Jeremy D.T., Asia Program Manager for Global Crossroad, an organization that runs volunteer programs in Tibet.
From interviews with program providers of study, volunteer, jobs, adventure, intern, and high school programs in Tibet listed on GoAbroad.com, safety of participants is the number one factor in deciding to run or cancel a program in an area affected by crisis or unrest.
Read what organizations with Tibet-based programs have to say about the current unrest in Tibet, how this affects their programs, and their advice for future participants. Read more...
