New Policies for Australian Student Visas

Effective April 26th 2008, students who get their Australian student visas will receive a work permit with their visa grant. Student visa holders will no longer need to file a separate application for permission to work in Australia. This new arrangement applies to both the primary student and any family members travelling with them on their student visa.

Work rights for student visa holders remain the same. Students will still be allowed to work up to 20 hours per week while their course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. Previously, most student visa holders paid a total of 490 AUD; in this new visa arrangement, a student will pay a combined charge of 450 AUD for both visa application and work permit.

For further information, visit the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship website or contact the Australian Embassy in your country. For study abroad programs in Australia, visit GoAbroad.com's Study Abroad Directory.
