Becca Spence - Travel Specialist

After 25 years and 32 countries, Becca is a travel legend. Originally from New Mexico state, Becca has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia, and has now spent over one year in Australia working for Ultimate Travel. She's a true storyteller and has plenty to share. Becca’s favourite parts about traveling are the excitement of arriving somewhere new and the friendships you make along the way.

How did you get connected to Ultimate Travel?

During my travels up the East Coast I met a boy who was working for Ultimate Travel as a tour guide in Sydney. He was constantly posting photos on Facebook of his daily routine working for Ultimate Oz, which consisted of days spent sailing on a catamaran, sand boarding, bonfires, beach walks, you name it; he was living the dream! I instantly contacted Ultimate Travel and asked if they were hiring, and to my surprise they were. One week later I found myself in Sydney interviewing for the job, and soon after that I was wearing the uniform.

What inspired you to start a career in the travel industry?

I absolutely love traveling, but I also love sharing my love of travel with others; being a travel agent lets me do just that. Each day I get to meet new people from all over the world and help them make their travel dreams a reality.

How have your own travel experiences changed your goals and perception of the world?

If anything, I just want to keep travelling. I love the feeling of arriving to a new destination and meeting new people to explore it with. I’m fascinated by other cultures and enjoy experiencing how others live in various parts of the world. And with each destination I check-off my bucket list, I somehow find a way to add another three.

What does a typical day of work look like for you?

It depends on the day really. Most days I spend in the office assisting young travellers in planning their holidays, but other days I'm out of the office actually enjoying our customers' holiday with them! The best part of my job is that there is no typical day. I could be giving a travel presentation one day to sight seeing in Fiji the next.

Through your role, how do you ensure that participants have a successful time abroad?

At Ultimate Travel we truly go out of our way to ensure that each of one our customers has the best experience with us abroad as possible. Each of us at Ultimate Travel have been in our customer's’ shoes, and understand the feelings that one may experience when leaving home for the first time. We want to make sure that we do everything in our means to make their time the best time, and although you may have come to us on your own, you've left with an Ultimate family.

What do you think is one of the most important things for travelers to keep in mind?

Patience; patience with yourself and patience with others. Not everyone is meant to feel the same when travelling. Some adapt very well and others not so much. But it's those who have patience and allow themselves to adapt to new environments and open up to new people that thrive the best. Travelling pushes you out of your comfort zone and it can be difficult at times. But it's a learning experience, and it's often those hard times you'll look back on and laugh at the most.

Lastly, live in the present. Your family and friends may be at home, but you are here, and I promise they are the ones who are jealous! It will go by before you know it, and you will want to do it all, all over again.

Live each day to the fullest, explore as much as possible, try new things, and ultimately just have fun!

Why do you believe in travel off the beaten track? How does Ultimate Travel encourage individuals to travel in this way?

Travelling off the beaten track allows you to create your own story. You're not visiting the waterfall or the view that everyone has told you about. You're creating a new adventure, one that will excite future travellers, and lead them off the beaten path.

Here at Ultimate Travel, we want you to have a unique experience. We hand pick everything, where you eat, sleep, and explore. We get you off the beaten track to make sure what you see is authentic and real, as we want our customers to have the most memorable experience out there.

What values does international travel provide individuals (professionally, personally, academically)?

Everything. There's no amount of money or time spent in an office or a classroom that will earn you the amount of experience you will gain from travelling first hand. Travelling teaches you independence, gratitude, understanding of others, social skills, money management, adaptability, spontaneity, and the list goes on and on. But ultimately, travelling teaches you who you are and who you can become. It will teach you who and what are the most valuable in your life. It will shape you in ways that you'll never expect, and when you return home after your travels your family and friends will say you haven't changed. But you have; you will be a better, more experienced you.

How does Ultimate Travel set itself apart from other travel program providers?

Not going to lie, we have a pretty amazing staff, a team that shares a passion for travel and wants to share this passion with our customers. Our team is full on. From our management team, who physically puts the tours together piece by piece, to our crazy tour guides, who look after our customers in every sense of the word, whether that be waking you up in the morning to dancing with you at the club that night. Our travel agents are also there to look after every detail of your trip to ensure our customers' holidays run smoothly and that they return home with no regrets.

We love travel and we want you to love it too!

What is the most rewarding part about your job?

The experiences as well as the people I get to work with! Surf camp, diving with bull sharks, snowboarding Thredbo, Jervis Bay, skydiving from 14,000 feet, I've done the coolest things because of my job. And, I get to share those experiences with an amazing team. I’m constantly meeting new people, trying new things, and having the time of my life with Ultimate Travel!
