Cockney in Translation

This video was made by Michigan State University students Joshua Barnett, Gregg Gaddy, Rachel Hartman, and Stephanie Sparks for the 2008 Film in Britain study abroad program.

They interviewed three people at the Lord John Russell Pub in the Bloomsbury area of London about their knowledge of Cockney rhyming slang, a rhyming slang cryptolect of English developed to confuse authorities that has since embedded itself as a semi-common slang in areas of London. It now mainly serves to confuse foreigners.

Famous Cockneys include actor Michael Caine and punk rock star Sid Vicious. And did you know that the gecko lizard in the GEICO television advertising campaign speaks in a Cockney accent?
