5. Spanish

Many students who study abroad want to learn a second language that will be useful to them in their future careers. Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the United States, and the most widely understood language in the Western Hemisphere. Studying abroad in a Spanish speaking country, like Spain, is one of the best ways to learn the language. Study abroad students are completely immersed in an area where they are forced to communicate in Spanish daily to do just about anything.

Why Barcelona? Spanish natives are typically appreciative of travelers that are learning their language and will try to help facilitate better communication. Another advantage to learning Spanish in Barcelona is that you will learn a fairly proper dialect of the language in comparison to some areas in the United States where Spanish has hybridized with English. Catalan is a language similar to Spanish that is spoken specifically in Barcelona and the region of Catalonia. When living in Spain, students have the opportunity to pick up on the Catalan culture too!

You can tour the beautiful Sagrada Familia up close and observe every significant and distinct detail that Gaudí instilled into the church’s design. Construction began in 1882 and although it is still in progress, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

You can also venture to Park Güell, a garden complex highlighting some of Gaudí’s best work and one of the most beautiful icons of the city.
